I think the moment we realize that there can be straight gnc people and dysphoric cis people, and that they can coexist with gnc gay people and trans people, we will all start understanding and accepting each other a lot more.
The existence of dysphoric cis people does not negate the existence of trans people, we can coexist as individuals and yet connected experiences. We need to address that there are cis people uncomfortable with their bodies because of their gender, typically stemming from the influence of societal expectations. But there are for sure people who really are a gender they weren’t assigned at birth (me being one of them). And that isn’t us being confused or having internalized issues, but a genuine identity and being with a certain gender. Those are both very valid existences, and should stop being at odds with each other.
Straight people can be gnc. When we start seeing them as being closetedly gay because of their gender expression, we are saying that being gay is an undermining of gender, which has been said by homophobes and transphobes for years. This is not unlike saying that gay men are lesser men for being gay, and that our sexualities are the dictators of our genders. It’s heteronormativity and patriarchy.
We cannot break down societies’ barriers and expectations about gender and sexuality in relation to gender if we repeatedly validate those concepts and reinforce them.
Terfs/truscum don’t touch.
